Since 1898
At Mitchell Hardware, we’re more than just a store, we’re a piece of local history and a living part of the New Bern community. Established in 1898, our store has grown and evolved through generations, while staying true to its welcoming, service-first spirit.
Today, it’s proudly run by sisters Lindsay Sims and Winnie Smith, who grew up in the store and now carry on their father Greg Smith’s legacy with energy and heart. As a family-owned general store, we offer a little bit of everything — from hardware and garden tools to gifts, home goods, and local treasures — all with a personal touch. What sets us apart is our focus on people: we listen, we help, and we genuinely care.
Our small, dedicated team knows our customers by name and works hard to make every visit feel special. Whether you’re a local, a tourist, or just passing through, Mitchell Hardware is a place where you’ll find what you need and discover something you didn’t know you wanted. Mitchell Hardware isn’t just a place to shop — it’s a friendly, community hub where people matter. It’s a place to connect, celebrate, and experience the kind of care that’s hard to find. Welcome to our store — and welcome to the family.
Mitchell Hardware was founded as a livery stable in 1898 on E. Front Street selling horses, wagons, and harnesses. In the early 1900s, the business moved to Craven Street and developed into a hardware store. The final owner of the Mitchell family was Thomas Mitchell IV, fondly known as “Buzz”. He is remembered for his straightforward demeanor and his ability to locate items for customers that were stored inside cigar boxes around the shop.
In 1987, local banker and Swiss Bear Chairman Harold Talton stepped in to save Mitchell Hardware from closing. Within a week of discussions, he and his wife, Patricia—an English teacher—purchased the business and, within a year, bought the 1912 historic S.B. Parker building across the street to relocate and expand. They renovated the space to meet modern needs while preserving its turn-of-the-century charm, including original tin ceilings, leaded glass, hardwood floors, and vintage-style shelving. As longtime New Bern residents and active community members, the Taltons were committed to preserving local tradition. They chose to keep the Mitchell name and invited their nephew, Greg Smith, to manage the store.
In 2010, Greg Smith became the proud owner of Mitchell Hardware, carrying forward the legacy his uncle began. Known fondly as “Mr. Downtown New Bern,” Greg transformed the store into a gathering place where every customer was greeted with a smile and his signature “Hi, friend!” His deep knowledge of every shelf and unwavering care for his community made him a local icon. Beyond the store, Greg supported countless local causes and helped shape the revitalization of downtown New Bern. His warmth, humor, and dedication continue to guide the store today through his daughters, Winnie and Lindsay.
Greg Smith’s daughters, Winnie Smith and Lindsay Sims, proudly took ownership of Mitchell Hardware in 2018, continuing the family tradition they grew up in. Deeply rooted in the store’s legacy, they’ve carried forward their father’s spirit of service, hard work, and community connection. Together, they oversee daily operations, curate local products, and lead a small but mighty team who share their passion for helping every customer feel at home. Whether it’s an early-morning hardware run or a last-minute gift, the sisters bring warmth and care to every interaction. Today, they continue to preserve the store’s charm while keeping it fresh for the next generation of locals and visitors alike.
Mitchell’s is a favorite stop for New Bern locals and a must-visit for those passing through. Whether you’re running a quick errand, picking up a last-minute gift, or just want to experience an old-school general store, there’s something special here for everyone. Dogs are welcome!
